Welcome!

Welcome to the Machine Data Insights Blog!

Here I will be adding articles about Splunk, Machine Learning, and using the two together – and sometimes, random topics that suit my fancy.

I believe we are witnessing one of the the next great revolutions in the advancement of civilization: the development of artificial intelligence, which includes machine learning and ‘deep learning’ algorithms for increasing the utility of our computing solutions and the value of the data they work with, and ultimately the emergence of true Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which is “the hypothetical ability of an intelligent agent to understand or learn any intellectual task that a human being can”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_general_intelligence

I personally intend to participate and hopefully contribute to the advancement of AI/ML solutions, and their application to both business opportunities and robotics. The articles in this blog will typically be in relation to and support of these interests.

There are a few disclaimers and rules associated with this blog:

  1. In the interest of getting any particular blog actually written and published, I may write in a no-frills method that is a little casual. Although I try to be careful about grammar and sentence structure, spending too much time on polish and fancy illustrations, etc. usually doesn’t make a post more informative.
  2. I may make certain assumptions that the reader (often, myself if I’m referring back to a post after some time) is reasonably knowledgeable about computer software topics related to and supporting a given subject or objective, and I might abbreviate or skip over some of the details and processes for these topics. Google is our friend here. In like fashion, if I’m just learning the landscape on a subject I may provide too much detail – and I may clean that up later.
  3. Related to the last point above – I reserve the right to alter a previously published post at any time to add, delete, correct, or try to better explain a subject. The post may still show the original publish date, so I’ll try to annotate when and what changes I’ve made within the new verbiage, and give credit to the source of those changes where appropriate.
  4. These blog posts represent my (or any employee or guest author) best understanding of a given topic at the time of writing – but I am, as are we all, only human and there may be errors in my sources or my interpretation of a subject, or in my expression of or opinions on that interpretation in the text or diagrams. It is ultimately and entirely the responsibility of the reader to validate any material presented here and leverage his/her best experience and judgement before applying any knowledge, processes, or any other actions or any expressions of their understanding of this material to his/her personal or business environments. I, and Machine Data Insights Inc., do not accept any responsibility for any errors,  omissions, or any unfortunate events or outcomes that a reader may encounter as a result of trying to apply information provided in this blog in any way.
  5. When presented with conflicting information about any content in any blog post by readers or other sources, I reserve the right to alter or not alter the original content as I see fit. This, however, does not preclude the stance of point 4 above.
  6. I reserve the right to challenge or remove any comment that I do not believe is sufficiently accurate or appropriate to the topic at hand and may confuse, frustrate, or mislead other readers.
  7. While questions asking to clarify a point in a given blog article are very welcome, I and others that may make comments on a post have jobs, clients, and other responsibilities that make demands on our time. Please do not ask for assistance with troubleshooting or learning about a topic beyond reasonable bounds of the subject at hand – Google, StackOverflow, company Slack channels, or other help boards are a better place for those types of questions. Also, my moderation/posting of your comments, responses to your questions or comments that suggest the need for a response may be delayed – sometimes, for multiple days. Thank you for understanding.

FINALLY:
COMMENTS SUBMITTED TO THIS BLOG ARE MODERATED – NO DISPARAGING, INSULTING, RACIAL, SEXUAL, OR OTHERWISE UNFRIENDLY OR INAPPROPRIATE COMMENTS WILL BE TOLERATED. WE ALL COME FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS AND CULTURES, WITH DIFFERING LEVELS OF KNOWLEGE, EXPERIENCE, AND STRENGTHS – WE ALL HAVE SOMETHING TO LEARN, WE ALL HAVE SOMETHING TO OFFER. YOU ARE WELCOME AND ENCOURAGED TO ASK QUESTIONS, CHALLENGE, OR SUGGEST ADDITIONS/CORRECTIONS TO ANY SUBJECT WITH A COMMENT – BUT YOU WILL DO SO IN WHAT I CONSIDER TO BE A PROFESSIONAL, FRIENDLY, HELPFUL, INCLUSIVE MANNER OR YOU *WILL* BE BARRED FROM THIS SITE FOR LIFE.

I look forward to your comments, questions, and suggestions!
